The current geopolitical situation can perhaps be compared to a thrilling T20 game — intense, unpredictable and often decided by the finer details.
Every action taken by a government can tilt the odds, sometimes gradually and sometimes decisively. Much like how a few searing yorkers from Jasprit Bumrah can suddenly turn the momentum of a game, strategic decisions around energy, manufacturing and imports can have a similar impact on an economy.
One trend that deserves appreciation is the continued push towards strengthening the local market — or, in other words, a stronger push towards Make in India.
A stronger domestic manufacturing ecosystem is important. But equally important is ensuring that the energy powering that ecosystem is secure, affordable and increasingly diversified.
Energy Security Is No Longer Just an Energy Issue!!
Recent geopolitical developments have once again highlighted how dependent global economies are on critical energy supply routes.
The Strait of Hormuz is a reminder of this vulnerability. Any disruption in such a strategically important route can have implications far beyond the oil industry, eventually affecting transportation, manufacturing and the cost of doing business.
This is where alternate fuels and energy efficiency become more than environmental initiatives. They become economic and strategic tools.
The growth of EVs is one example. Without the increasing adoption of electric mobility and the gradual diversification of our energy sources, the impact of disruptions in global oil supply could be considerably harder to absorb.
The same thinking can be applied to industrial energy.
Turning Agricultural Waste into Energy
Another interesting development is the push towards greater utilisation of agricultural waste pellets, including the mandate encouraging the use of at least 5% biomass pellets in large power plants.
It is an example of potentially addressing two challenges at once. First, it can reduce dependence on conventional fossil fuels and contribute to lower emissions.
Second, agricultural waste that may otherwise be burned or treated as waste can become a useful fuel, creating an additional economic opportunity within the agricultural supply chain. In other words, what was once a waste problem can become part of the energy solution.

Bringing the Idea to the Factory Floor..
This transition should not be limited to large power plants.
Industrial process heating is another area where alternative fuels can make a meaningful difference. At Metasis, we are working with agri-waste pellet-fired burner systems designed for suitable industrial applications.
These systems can be evaluated as an alternative to conventional fossil-fuel-fired combustion systems, including suitable process boiler applications below 10 TPH, depending on the boiler configuration, fuel requirement and site conditions.
The proposition is relatively simple:
Use a locally available fuel, reduce dependence on conventional fossil fuels and potentially reduce operating costs.
In many applications, the economics can be particularly interesting when biomass pellet costs are favourable compared with the existing fuel. At the same time, these systems are designed to be practical to operate and maintain.
Of course, every boiler and application is different. The right approach is therefore to evaluate the existing fuel consumption, operating hours, steam requirement, boiler efficiency and pellet economics before making the transition.

The Next Move:
India’s energy transition will not be driven by one technology alone. We will need renewable power, electrification, energy efficiency, cleaner fuels and better utilisation of resources already available within the country. Agricultural waste pellets may not be the single answer to India’s energy challenge. But they can certainly be one more important option in India’s energy toolkit.
And just like a T20 match, the game does not always change because of one massive move. Sometimes, it changes through a series of smaller, well-timed decisions. For Indian industry, choosing how we produce and consume energy could be one of those decisions.
At Metasis, we believe the transition can begin at the factory floor — one boiler, one fuel and one application at a time.
